Starting up the course again – day after Brahms Clarinet Quintet

I have just restarted work on the OCA Composition Year 1 course after about three months away from it, working and being a new grandad.

Yesterday with friends played through Brahms’ clarinet quintet, a late work.

Why does Brahms stir up such contrary views – for and against?  His writing is quite thick at times with double stopping in inner parts.  But the melody has such long lines.   The slow movement is particularly fine – a quasi-improvisation for the clarinet with tremolo in the strings – quite hard to follow the clarinet line without cues.

Back to commenting on some solo wind instrument pieces for the course – up next.
